history/sypnosis
Notes
The basis of the story is that a kind princess, Sakura, has her memories stolen and scattered across multiple worlds. These memories take the form of feathers. Syaoran, her childhood friend and love interest, goes on a mission to collect the feathers. Kuorgane is a warrior obsessed with strength and wants to return home. Mokona is a small creature created by Yuuko, the dimensional witch, who allows our characters to teleport between worlds and translates the languages of each world.
A simplified version can be found on his wiki page found here.
The history section of the wiki isn't very detailed, but the synopsis of the story is located in the locations section so I will be linking them in order of the story. Warning: his history contains severe child abuse.
History
◦ Born into misfortune, 'Fai' was a prince whose greatest sin was being born a twin. In actuality, his name is Yuui, but he later adopts the name of his brother. The son of the Emperor's younger brother, his birth was greatly anticipated, but the country believes that twins are a sign of bad luck. All of the kingdom's misfortunes were blamed on them, and their mother eventually kills herself. Their father also passes. Their magic was so great that even as babies, their combined power was said to rival that of the Emperor.
Fearful of the twins but afraid their murder would bring bigger misfortune, the kingdom decides the boys' misery would mean their prosperity. The two are locked away in a special place where magic is negated and time flows differently. They're given the choice to go 'willingly' or to be forced to kill each other. Yuui is placed at the bottom of the valley, where 'sinner' bodies are dumped and, due to the strange flow of time, never decay. This leaves him alone save for the corpses that line the valley. Fai is locked at the top. The two are never fed, leaving them to age slowly and become nearly skeletal because of their lack of meals. Likewise, their lips are dry from lack of hydration.
One day, Yuui notices that more and more bodies are being thrown into the valley, including children. Finding a scroll, he learns that the Emperor has gone mad and is killing innocent people. Again, the twins are to blame. Wondering if they can do something for the country, Yuui begins to climb the tower, only to fall back down and be greeted by the Emperor himself. Before taking his own life, the Emperor assures Yuui that they're the reason for so much suffering, and the twins will have to live for a very long time knowing that.
Eventually, Fei Wong Reed shows up and offers both Fai and Yuui a deal: one of them can be saved, and it's up to them to decide. Though his memory is altered to make Yuui think he chose to live at the cost of his brother's life, Fai actually chose for Yuui to live, and his body is thrown from the tower. Since he believes himself to be his brother's murderer, his guilt allows Reed to convince him to go on the future journey with Sakura and party. To prepare him, Reed tells Yuui of his future traveling companions and that he'll find two of the feathers before they meet. He's also told that this Sakura will be a clone, something the rest of the group won't know for most of the journey. Yuui becomes Fai when Ashura comes to retrieve him and take him to Celese.
Many years later, having been given the last name Flourite and earning the rank of D (the highest possible in the kingdom of Celese), Fai finds a feather while saving a group from an avalanche. They thank him, and he sadly replies that he's only happy no one was hurt. A little girl states it would be better if he smiled. Using the feather, he creates Chi, a magical being, in the form of his mother, to keep the feather close to him.
Upon returning home, Ashura mentions the curse that will require Fai to kill anyone who has stronger magic than him and places the tattoo on his back. The phoenix-like symbol stunts the growth of his magic until the symbol disappears, but he also explains that the curse will only activate once. In tandem, Ashura makes Fai promise to kill anyone who should threaten the kingdom.
Further in the future, Fai states his frustration with being unable to learn healing or restoration magic. Ashura assures him that his smile is, in some ways, magic that can also heal the heart. This begins Fai's habit of smiling even when unhappy.
One day, they learn of a creature that's murdered numerous people throughout Celes. It's eventually revealed that the 'creature' is actually Ashura, who's worked to get strong enough to activate Fai's curse - and also why he blocked Fai's power. The curse can only be activated once, and the king wants to protect Fai by being his only victim. Unable to kill Ashura, he instead puts the king to sleep and flees from his world.

◦ The Witch's Price
〉Fai is first introduced emerging from a pool of water that now holds a sleeping King Ashura, and we learn that it's Fai's magic that allowed the sleeping spell. He tells Chii to watch over the sleeping king and teleports to the Witch's realm.
〉Here, he meets Kurogane and the others, and they all must pay a price to move to new words. When others point out that Fai managed to change worlds on his own, he claims it uses too much magic and can't be done again. When the witch demands a price, he offers his staff, but she claims the tattoo that's on his back instead. After they all pay the price, the group of five travels together to their first world.
