MEDICAL
Fai is a wizard with magic strong enough to keep him alive for a very long time. His right eye drains his life and weakens him with every use of magic. To balance it out, his left extends his life and strengthens his magic with every use. During a portion of canon, Fai loses his left eye and wears an eye patch. During this time, he's also a vampire who needs to feed from Kurogane. By the end of Tsubasa Chronicles, he's regained his eye.
PERSONALITY
Please note that the following will have passing mentions of child abuse and suicide. TDLR; kind, helpful, distant, outwardly cheerful, depressed;
Outwardly, Fai is a bright, cheerful, happy individual who's always ready to lend a hand. It's rare that a panel exists that shows Fai with anything other than a smile. When one of the kids is sick, it's Fai who worries about them and assures they're fed and comfortable. Early in their adventure, he deems himself 'mommy', and it's a title he plays well. When depression hits, Fai is quick to offer guidance and inspiration. While Kurogane is often pictured with Syaoran when not with Fai, Fai is often pictured with Sakura, and I believe this is due to their similarities. Both are kind and selfless to a fault.
It's a mask. In reality, he's a depressed individual who holds no real desire to live. In his world, twins were a sign of bad omens and Fai, born Yuui, was born with such a twin. This leads his mother to kill herself before he and his brother are separated and locked away. For an unknown number of years, they're forced to go without food and water while hearing how horrible they are... all for being born. Then, he's manipulated and led to believe he chose to have his brother die to save himself. Now, he lives with guilt, regret, and shame. Even this mission is a fulfillment of a promise and so, even as he helps the group, Fai is also deceiving them.
Those same emotions have made him decide to avoid close relationships. In spite of sincerely liking people, the smile and faux inability to take anything seriously also builds a sort of wall. How deep can a relationship really be if he doesn't allow himself to show anything besides over-the-top happiness? Where is he from? It's a secret. Oh? Did he say something different before? How silly, he must have made a mistake at the time. His willingness to lie and deceive is also a part of his protection. Fai greets the world with a smile that hides the truth hiding beneath. It's notable that he voices his plans to avoid growing even closer to Kurogane.
However, his kindness and selflessness aren't lies. While it might be easy to assume he's kind to the party in order to fulfill his promise, the truth is that we see the same kindness even before he meets the others. Even as an abused child, when he realizes something is wrong with the kingdom, he tries to climb out of the valley to see if he can help the same people who abused him. Fai is shown helping people when living in Celes for no reason other than his desire to help, and he doesn't even require any sort of gratitude. When a beast first appears, Fai is even willing to risk his life to fight it. His tragic past hasn't hardened his heart to the world, only to himself. By the end of the journey, even with the truth revealed, Fai hasn't changed his kindness and caring toward the rest of the group. With nothing to hide going into Tsubasa World Chronicles, it's still the magician who tries to assure everyone is cared for.
If asked, most of the characters who've met him would call Fai 'silly to a fault', but in actuality, he's very observant and intelligent. Both Fai and Kurogane serve as exposition when they explain the things they've noticed throughout their adventures. Often, the two will stay behind to discuss their worries and theories while Sakura and Syaoron go on ahead. The issue lies in his tendency to keep secrets. If the realization is something that can be shared with others, he doesn't hesitate, but if it's something that would reveal more about himself or his past, or even Sakura's intentions, Fai's more likely to keep the information to himself.
A smaller side that really only seems to come out around Kurogane is his willingness to tease to the point of annoyance. It's notable that Fai says he has never used a nickname around Kurogane, a man who doesn't hear his real name from Fai's mouth until the magician is very angry at him. Something about Kurogane brings out a side that makes him want to tease and almost verbally bully him. Once the swordsman saved Fai's life against Fai's will, the blond even calls him by name with the explanation, to someone else, that he worries forgiving Kurogane will lead to an even closer relationship.
In the follow-up manga 'Tsubasa World Chronicles', Fai is toned down a little. He still seems silly, and smiles even when he doesn't mean it, but he's overcome a lot of his past and is less over-the-top.
Speech patterns: Fai speaks casually and friendly. Even with strangers, he seems open and inviting, but even at a later canon point, he's not as open as he seems. Still, there's a focus on warmth and comfort with whomever he's speaking with. Besides Kurogane.
APPEARANCE
Fai has no canon height or weight, but he's notably shorter than Kurogane while being taller than the kids. I headcanon him at 5'10. Canonically, he's very thin and slight as is mentioned by other characters. Fai has a few distinct looks. The first is from early canon and remains his default look until he consumes vampire blood. At this point, he gains an eyepatch over his left eye and soon, his hair is long enough to tie back as shown here. Once Fai trades the last remnants of his magic for Kurogane's arm, his eye becomes gold. Finally, the above photo is current Fai, taken from Tsubasa World Chronicles. 
Fai's default robes are elegant, beautiful, and large. However, he has no issue about changing to fit the style of the world they're visiting.

CHILD ABUSE - Fai and his brother were horribly mistreated as children. Verbally abused, they were locked away and denied food and water for an unknown number of years. They were made to believe that anything bad was because of their existance.
SUICIDE - Ashamed of giving birth to twins, Fai's mother killed herself while he was still very young
EYE HORROR - Fai's eye is literally ripped from his body and digested so his attacker can gain his magic power. They then tried to eat the other eye directly from the socket.
